Subversive Pubquiz

Subversive quiz:

Quotes from Wretched of the earth from Frantz Fanon, first quote is from preface written by Jean-Paul Sartre, second from Frantz Fanon (quiz questions + answers can be found below).

“Europeans, you must open this book and enter into it. After a few steps in the darkness you will see strangers gathered around a fire; come close, and listen, for they are talking of the destiny they will mete out to your trading centers and to the hired soldiers who defend them. They will see you, perhaps, but they will go on talking among themselves, without even lowering their voices. This indifference strikes home: their fathers, shadowy creatures, your creatures, were but dead souls; you it was who allowed them glimpses of light, to you only did they dare speak, and you did not bother to reply to such zombies. Their sons ignore you; a fire warms them and sheds light around them, and you have not lit it. Now, at a respectful distance, it is you who will feel furtive, nightbound, and perished with cold. Turn and turn about; in these shadows from whence a new dawn will break, it is you who are the zombies. In this case, you will say, lef s throw away this book. Why read it if it is not written for us? For two reasons: the first is that Fanon explains you to his brothers and shows them the mechanism by which we are estranged from ourselves; take advantage of this, and get to know yourselves seen in the light of truth, objectively. Our victims know us by their scars and by their chains, and it is this that makes their evidence irrefutable. It is enough that they show us what we have made of them for us to realize what we have made of ourselves. But is it any use? Yes, for Europe is at death's door. But, you will say, we live in the mother country, and we disapprove of her excesses. It is true, you are not settlers, but you are no better. For the pioneers belonged to you; you sent them overseas, and it was you they enriched. You warned them that if they shed too much blood you would disown them, or say you did, in something of the same way as any state maintains abroad a mob of agitators, agents provocateurs, and spies whom it disowns when they are caught. You, who are so liberal and so humane, who have such an exaggerated adoration of culture that it verges on affectation, you pretend to forget that you own colonies and that in them men are massacred in your name. Have the courage to read this book, for in the first place it will make you ashamed, and shame, as Marx said, is a revolutionary sentiment.”

Frantz Fanon: "The settler makes history; his life is an epoch, an Odyssey. He is the absolute beginning: "This land was created by us"; he is the unceasing cause: "If we leave, all is lost, and the country will go back to the Middle Ages."(...)As soon as the native begins to pull on his moorings, and to cause anxiety to the settler, he is handed over to well-meaning souls who in cultural congresses point out to him the specificity and wealth of Western values. But every time Western values are mentioned they produce in the native a sort of stiffening or muscular lockjaw. During the period of decolonization, the native's reason is appealed to. He is offered definite values, he is told frequently that decolonization need not mean regression, and that he must put his trust in qualities which are welltried, solid, and highly esteemed. But it so happens that when the native hears a speech about Western culture he pulls out his knife—or at least he makes sure it is within reach. The violence with which the supremacy of white values is affirmed and the aggressiveness which has permeated the victory of these values over the ways of life and of thought of the native mean that, in revenge, the native laughs in mockery when Western values are mentioned in front of him. In the colonial context the settler only ends his work of breaking in the native when the latter admits loudly and intelligibly the supremacy of the white man's values. In the period of decolonization, the colonized masses mock at these very values, insult them, and vomit them up. (...) in Algeria, the Front de Liberation Nationale, in a famous leaflet, stated that colonialism only loosens its hold when the knife is at its throat, no Algerian really found these terms too violent. The leaflet only expressed what every Algerian felt at heart: colonialism is not a thinking machine, nor a body endowed with reasoning faculties. It is violence in its natural state, and it will only yield when confronted with greater violence." Link to online Pdf.

Question number 1:
How many attempts, thus not meaning successful per se, of overthrowing foreign governments has the United states conducted, with or without help of its allies, since world war two.

A: between 5 and 10.
B: between 10 and 25.
C: between 25 and 35.
D: between 35 and 50.
E: Atleast more than 50, we actually have no fucking clue.
F: All of the above are bullshit, the US is a democracy.

The right answer is E. An elaborate but not complete list was made by historian William Blum:

Do you know the School of the Americas? SOA-Watch described the school as follows:
"Since 1946, the SOA has trained over 64,000 Latin American soldiers in counterinsurgency techniques, sniper training, commando and psychological warfare, military intelligence and interrogation tactics. These graduates have consistently used their skills to wage a war against their own people. Among those targeted by SOA graduates are educators, union organizers, religious workers, student leaders, and others who work for the rights of the poor. Hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans have been tortured, raped, assassinated, “disappeared,” massacred, and forced into refugee by those trained at the School of Assassins."

Question number 2:
Who made the following statement after Haiti was freed by the revolution of the enslaved, between the period 1791–1804:  "My decision to destroy the authority of the blacks in Saint Dominque (Haiti) is not so much based on considerations of commerce and money, as on the need to block for ever the march of the blacks in the world"

A: Napoleon Bonaparte from France.
B: Willem Frederik, prince of Orange-Nassau king of the Netherlands.
C: Thomas Jefferson third president of the United States.
D: Such racist statements would never have been made by western leaders as they were there to help others.

The right answer is A. The name of the person who led the revolt was Toussaint Louverture. The revolt empowered/inspired more revolts and increased pressure on western countries to abolish slavery.

Question number 3:

What were some of  the consequences of Haiti being liberated:

A: The west slowly started understanding its unethical behavior and brutality of chattel slavery. Hereafter racism slowly started to be less popular in western countries, which resulted in the ending of slavery elsewhere.
B: Haiti started to make contact with other islands in the Caribbean to help kick start revolutions over there and inspired others to revolts, after which Jamaica and Aruba were liberated.
C:  Haiti was forced to pay its former coloniser millions in gold francs as to compensate the enslavers for their loss in 'property'.
D: Internationally speaking not much happened, france and other western countries accepted Haiti as an independent country by just ignoring it. Hereafter Haiti struggled building there internal stability in their institutions.

The right answer is C. The Haitian population was forced to pay france this compensation for more than 100 years untill 1947! This is 140 years after the abolition of the slave trade.  Furthermore, Haiti was forced to borrow money from france as to pay this debt over which interest rates were charged by the French. : http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/cifamerica/2010/aug/16/haiti-france

Hitler was not the first to use the concentration camp. Long before World War II, the British used this secured "camp" where civilian enemies were placed (this It was 1900). Other examples of concentration camps were the one in the Philippines in 1902 by the US when it annexed the Philippines to crush resistance, this was during the Philippine–American War.  Also interesting to terms to google are the ‘Japanese internment camps’ of the US during world war two also google death camp against the Herero people made by Germany.

Wie is jouw grote held?"
Wie is jouw grote held?"
Over grenzen heen kijken... dynamiek".

Picture taken from a textbook for 10-11 year old children, shows a drawing of a white “planter” with a speech bubble over his head reading: “It is way too hot to work the land. Fortunately, our slaves are used to this heat”. Credit for this picture goes to Melissa Weiner.

Waarover Weiner in haar onderzoek zegt dat "This statement not only sympathizes with Whites, but justifies and essentializes enslaved Africans given the long-standing scientific racist notion that Blacks are better physiologically equipped to work in hot climates.”
(foto genomen in 2015)
